Carotenoids

Tell what this is Dena??? Ok a little info.

What can high-carotenoid foods do for you?

  • Protect your cells from the damaging effects of free radicals
  • Provide a source of vitamin A
  • Enhance the functioning of your immune system
  • Help your reproductive system function properly

What events and lifestyle factors can indicate a need for more high-carotenoid foods?

  • Smoking and regular alcohol consumption
  • Low intake of fruits and vegetables

Food sources of carotenoids include carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, kale, collard greens, and tomatoes. To maximize the availability of the carotenoids in the foods listed above, the foods should be eaten raw or steamed lightly.

For serving size for specific foods, see Nutrient Rating Chart below at the bottom of this page.

What are carotenoids?

Carotenoids represent one of the most widespread groups of naturally occurring pigments. These compounds are largely responsible for the red, yellow, and orange color of fruits and vegetables, and are also found in many dark green vegetables. The most abundant carotenoids in the North American diet are beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, gamma-carotene, lycopene, lutein, beta-crpytoxanthin, zeaxanthin, and astaxanthin.

What are the functions of carotenoids?

Preventing Vitamin A Deficiency

Until late in the 20th Century, the functions of carotenoids were discussed only in terms of their potential vitamin A activity. Certain members of the carotenoid family, approximately 50 carotenoids of the known 600, are called "provitamin A" compounds because the body can convert them into retinol, an active form of vitamin A.
As a result, foods that contain carotenoids can help prevent vitamin A deficiency. The most commonly consumed provitamin A carotenoids are beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, and beta-cryptoxanthin, but gamma-carotene and beta-zeacarotene also have provitamin A activity.
Antioxidant & Immune-Enhancing Activity

In recent years, carotenoids have received a tremendous amount of attention as potential anti-cancer and anti-aging compounds. Carotenoids are powerful antioxidants, protecting the cells of the body from damage caused by free radicals. Carotenoids, and specifically beta-carotene, are also believed to enhance the function of the immune system.
Promoting Proper Cell Communication

In addition to their antioxidant and immune-enhancing activity, carotenoids have shown the ability to stimulate cell to cell communication. Researchers now believe that poor communication between cells may be one of the causes of the overgrowth of cells, a condition which eventually leads to cancer. By promoting proper communication between cells, carotenoids may play a role in cancer prevention.
It is also believed that carotenoids participate in female reproduction. Although the exact function of carotenoids in female reproduction has not yet been identified, it is known that the corpus luteum has the highest concentration of beta-carotene of any organ in the body, suggesting that this nutrient plays an important role in reproductive processes.

What are deficiency symptoms for carotenoids?

A low dietary intake of carotenoids is not known to directly cause any diseases or health conditions, at least in the short term. However, if your intake of vitamin A is also low, a dietary deficiency of the provitamin A carotenoids (beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, and beta-cryptoxanthin) can cause the symptoms associated with vitamin A deficiency.
In addition, long-term inadequate intake of carotenoids is associated with chronic disease, including heart disease and various cancers. One important mechanism for this carotenoid-disease relationship appears to be free radicals. Research indicates that diets low in carotenoids can increase the body's susceptibility to damage from free radicals. As a result, over the long term, carotenoid-deficient diets may increase tissue damage from free radical activity, and increase risk of chronic diseases like heart disease and cancers.
Due to low consumption of fruits and vegetables, many adolescents and young adults do not take in enough carotenoids. In addition, if you smoke cigarettes and/or drink alcohol, you may have lower than normal blood levels of carotenoids. Statistically speaking, smokers and drinkers eat fewer foods that contain carotenoids. Also, researchers suspect that cigarette smoke destroys carotenoids. However, if you do smoke or drink, use carotenoid supplements with caution (see Toxicity section).

What are toxicity symptoms for carotenes?

A tell-tale sign of excessive consumption of beta-carotene is a yellowish discoloration of the skin, most often occurring in the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. This condition is called carotenodermia, and is reversible and harmless. Excessive consumption of lycopene can cause a deep orange discoloration of the skin. Like carotenodermia, lycopenodermia is harmless.
High intake of carotenoid-containing foods or supplements is not associated with any toxic side effects. As a result, the Institute of Medicine at the National Academy of Sciences did not establish a Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) for carotenoids when it reviewed these compounds in 2000.
However, the results of two research studies indicate that those who smoke heavily and drink alcohol regularly, may increase their chance of developing lung cancer and/or heart disease if they take beta-carotene supplements in amounts greater than 20-30 milligrams per day.

How do cooking, storage, or processing affect carotenoids?

In certain cases, cooking can improve the availability of carotenoids in foods. For example, the availability of lycopene from tomato products is increased when the foods are processed at high temperatures. As a result, your body absorbs the lycopene in canned, pasteurized tomato juice more easily than the lycopene in a fresh tomato. In addition, lightly steaming carrots and spinach improves your body's ability to absorb the carotenoids in these foods.
It is important to note, however, that in most cases, prolonged cooking of vegetables decreases the availability of carotenoids by changing the shape of the carotenoid from its natural trans-configuration to a cis-configuration. For example, fresh carrots contain 100% all-trans beta-carotene, while canned carrots contain only 73% all-trans beta-carotene.

What factors might contribute to a deficiency of carotenoids?

Carotenoids are fat-soluble substances, and as such require the presence of dietary fat for proper absorption through the digestive tract. Consequently, your carotenoid status may be impaired by a diet that is extremely low in fat or if you have a medical condition that causes a reduction in the ability to absorb dietary fat such as pancreatic enzyme deficiency, Crohn's disease, celiac sprue, cystic fibrosis, surgical removal of part or all of the stomach, gall bladder disease, and liver disease.

What medications affect carotenoids?

The cholesterol-lowering medications referred to as bile acid sequestrants (Cholestyramine, Colestipol, and Colestid) lower blood levels of carotenoids. In addition, margarines enriched with plant sterols such as Benecol and Take Control, may decrease the absorption of carotenoids. Olestra, a fat substitute added to snack foods, may also decrease the absorption of carotenoids.

How do other nutrients interact with carotenoids?

Beta-carotene supplements reduce blood levels of lutein, suggesting that carotenoids may compete with each other for absorption.
Supplementing your diet with pectin may decrease the absorption of carotenoids.

What health conditions require special emphasis on carotenoids?

Carotenoids may play a role in the prevention and/or treatment of the following health conditions:

  • Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS)
  • Age-related macular degeneration
  • Angina pectoris
  • Asthma
  • Cataracts
  • Cervical cancer
  • Cervical dysplasia
  • Chlamydial infection
  • Heart disease
  • Laryngeal cancer (cancer of the larynx)
  • Lung cancer
  • Male and female infertility
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Photosensitivity
  • Pneumonia
  • Prostate cancer
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Skin cancer
  • Vaginal candidiasis

What forms of carotenoids are found in dietary supplements?

In dietary supplements, carotenoids are available as synthetic all-trans beta-carotene, beta- and alpha-carotene from the algae Dunaliella, and mixed carotenes from palm oil.
It is important to note, however, that, due to the inconsistent results from research studies aimed at evaluating the health benefits of beta-carotene supplements, the National Academy of Sciences cautions against taking high dose carotenoid supplements, except as a method for preventing vitamin A deficiency.

What foods provide carotenoids?

The orange-colored fruits and vegetables including carrots, apricots, mangoes, squash, and sweet potatoes contain significant amounts of beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, and beta-cryptoxanthin.
Green vegetables, especially spinach, kale, and collard greens, also contain beta-carotene, and are the best sources of lutein.
Lycopene is found in tomatoes, guava, and pink grapefruit. Salmon, shellfish, milk, and egg yolks also provide carotenoids.
The contribution of spices to available carotenoids in the U.S. diet has increased steadily, making spices a great choice for upping your carotenoid intake. Cayenne pepper and chili pepper are worthy of special mention here.

What are current public health recommendations for carotenoids?

To date, no recommended dietary intake levels have been established for carotenoids. In an effort to set such recommendations, the Institute of Medicine at the National Academy of Sciences reviewed the existing scientific research on carotenoids in 2000.
Despite the large body of population-based research that links high consumption of foods containing beta-carotene and other carotenoids with a reduced risk of several chronic diseases, the Institute of Medicine concluded that this evidence was not strong enough to support a required carotenoid intake level because it is not yet known if the health benefits associated with carotenoid-containing foods are due to the carotenoids or to some other substance in the food.
However, the National Academy of Sciences supports the recommendations of various health agencies, which encourage individuals to consume five or more servings of fruits and vegetable every day. This level of intake of fruits and vegetables provides approximately three to six milligrams of beta-carotene.

Fasting and addiction

Another favorite from the book.
It's funny I've said so many of the same things for year and now people I don't even know say the same.
I guess I wondered at times if people listen or do they think I'm crazy,, am I crazy haha. Then here we go, people come out of the wood work and I'm feeling NOT so alone.
So I'm copying a few of other peoples stuff to be sure people know I'm not alone,, this is real ,its true and people have been healed from many many things. And the ones thats are not sick feel better and are happier,,with fasting.
Fasting And Addiction
by
Ron Lagerquist
Fasting cuts away superficiality, getting down to the bone of living. Effective, due to its ability to strip away the props we have become so dependent on to get us through the day. The large coffee double-double, cinnamon Danish, ball game, Budweiser, nacho’s, cigarettes, sitcoms, hours upon squandered hours, and for some, drugs, pornography, overeating and alcoholism. When these props are removed, what remain are the spiritual resources within. If they are bankrupt then during fasting you will come face to face with a profound emptiness only God can fill. It is this very emptiness so many run from or try to offset with material things. Yet this is doomed to failure for we are created spiritual beings, with spiritual longing.
Fasting accomplishes two purposes. First, it will reveal how much the flesh has taken control of emotions, and secondly, it will serve in breaking the flesh’s hold upon the will.
Oh no my dear, I am not like those others, I’m not addicted to anything—until you attempt a fast.
Those who think you live autonomously in this world, fasting is a perfect immunity test, often a rude awakening of how toxic your daily requirements have become. What makes your world go around? Addiction is anything that controls you, and whether it’s food, pornography, coffee, TV or heroin, it taints independence and freedom.
The food industry has perfected the addictiveness of foods adding salt, fat and processed sugar, and millions crave their offerings daily. It is hard to tackle food addiction; after all we must eat, right? A quiet food-fix during a hectic day is only a drive-through away. Availability for the junk food addict is a real problem. Fasting is a great and needed break from eating, allowing the body to balance homeostasis, untangling emotions from the up-and-down roller-coaster ride addiction produces.
If I spend enough quality time with a certain food I start becoming emotionally attached. It’s just the way I am put together. Problem is, in the past I have made bad food-relationship decisions. Years ago I met an All Dressed Hostess Potato Chip in the seedy part of my grocery Store. Had no business being there in the first place. Let’s just say I was needy. Months later, and a painful break-up, we parted company, but the relationship left deep scares. About four inches deep around my waist. Oh, there was that seductive little Peanut Butter Cup. Never was interested until they came out with the three-pack for the price of two, remember that? Thought I was getting a deal, but ended up paying a bigger price later on. Took three years to end that co-dependent relationship. I learned my lesson and went food-celibate for 30 days, getting my emotions settled. Funny, after all these years every time I see Peanut Butter Cup it still feels like I am going to break out in acne.
The good news is for the last few years I have been seeing someone and it’s looking good. We spend our mornings together. Cravings that usually accompany co-dependency is not there, just old fashioned hunger. Real colorful personality too, sweet in the most natural way. I think it’s a healthy relationship, my fruit salad and me. When I wake up, I’m not thinking bacon and eggs, no. An orange, grapefruit, two bananas, half a cantaloupe, grapes, two pears; add a little natural yogurt to taste, and wow!
I have learned something about life. Spent time with the wrong people and you become just a little bit like them. Chose your friends wisely. But greater still this applies to what you cram into every cell, tub and membrane of your body. You will develop emotional and physiological attachments to what you eat daily, especially the foods you turn to when lonely and depressed. They will have the strongest attachment. The great news is if you are willing to go through a period of separation-blues, you can form healthy attachments just like my beloved fruit salad.
Jesus awaits our willingness to surrender our addiction gods. Remember the young Rich Man. Wealth choked his very soul. He truly hungered for the Kingdom; all people do whether they know it or not. And Jesus loved him—gave him the way out of his meaningless existence. Yet it was an impossibility at that moment. The ruler was young and in love with the luxuries money secured. The emptiness within had to ferment longer until it would eat away his pride and independence. Then he would be ready.
Fasting invariably brings to the surface deep-seated fears that affect thinking and decision-making. It does this by challenging that complex human instinct called self-preservation. This instinct has been created in every living thing on earth, including man. But you are a New Creation in Christ, recreated not to be controlled by instincts. Because of a rebirth, you have been recreated into a creature of a higher and grander design than that of your former life.
Recently I was reading about the negative effects of coffee shaking my head at myself and all humanity. “Coffee promotes aging and can cause impotence.” How much would we pay if they discovered a drink you could consume every morning that would slow down aging and increase libido? I would hazard a lot! Yet here I was, eating an almost raw diet, working out in the gym, applying special moisturizing creams to my face after the shower, coloring the gray out of my goatee, the last vestige of hair I own, and paying for and drinking an extract of bean that is known to increase aging and hobnobs with impotency. For what? A meager hour of energy borrowed from the rest of the day so for hours afterward I feel tired. That’s nuts! There is only one thing that causes us to act so irrationally and self-destructive. Addiction.
The problem is addictions take no work on our part, you just drink something, pop a pill, sit back and let it happen. We put so much faith in our addictions, that’s what gives them power. And we are surprised when we discover, Hey, I can live without this, in fact I can live better.

juice fast and protein

One of the many questions I get ask is about Protein. I'm not sure but I think people just like saying it. I ask them to explain it to me. What happens ,why do you need it where does it come from, and what has protein.
Protein & Fasting

by

Ron Lagerquist

It was theorized that protein loss during fasting was harmful and that a fast should be supplemented with protein. Fasting with protein became known as the Opti-fast. Fasters took nothing but water and a protein drink. Sadly, several people died. Protein digestion during the fasting state created an overload of urea and the blood become acidic. In this condition, the organs become more damaged instead of healing.

To the body, fasting is a natural process. During water or juice fasting, the protein levels of the blood remain constant. Although protein is being utilized, a person fasting 40 days on water will not suffer a deficiency of either protein, vitamins, minerals or fatty acids. In the breakdown of dying and diseased cells, all essential substances are available while fasting for reuse within the body. These dead cells are utilized in a systematic manner. Some diseases may take 30 day of juice fasting because it has take that long for the body to cleanse deeply enough to bring about healing.
That what he said boy is it true.

Protein & Fasting Points
Protein deficiency is non existent in North America. You never hear of anyone being diagnosed with protein deficiency.

Fruit and vegetable juices have water soluble highly absorbable proteins.

The body has a store of protein, and it uses it selectively. Dieing cells are the first to be used and healthy and vital tissues are the very last and will only be used as a last resort.

Only during starvation is protein being stripped form healthy tissue to be used to survive. This may take be 30 to 80 days of water fasting on water to reach this point.

The systematic searching of cells to be metabolized is crucial in the healing of cancer. A cancer cell is represents protein and calories. Some cancers are so persistent that you have to force the body to choose between healthy cells and cancer cells. This requires a long fast on small portions of juice combined with days of water fasting.

Freeform amino acids may be of value, as they do not interfere with the cleansing process. An athlete fasting to tune up the system may consider a fast supplemented with free-form amino acids.

METHODS OF DETOXIFICATION
Juice Fasting
This is the best choice for detoxification because it supplies an abundance of nutrients, including enzymes and calories to reduce the cleansing intensity to a more comfortable level. Using an enema during a juice fast will flush the lymphatic system attached to the lower colon with water and help remove hardened fecal matter from the intestinal wall, while giving the digestive tract a chance to rest and heal.
Water Fasting
Water fasting demands more calories therefore cleansing will be intensified.
Raw Food Diet
The same cleansing reaction that is experienced on a juice fast will also be experienced on a raw food diet of fruit and vegetables but the process is slower.
Eating Less
This is a good way to start the detoxification process but can require the greatest discipline. Chew food 30 times and eat smaller amounts.
Vegetarian Eating
A light vegetarian diet will also aid detoxification. For example, fruit for breakfast, a salad for lunch and a meal of cooked vegetables with some raw nuts or beans and brown rice for dinner.
Exercise
During exercise the lymphatic system is being flushed and the cells are being flooded with health-giving oxygen. Walking, stretching and light exercise can benefit the body during a juice fast or cleansing diet.
Other Detoxification Procedures
Homeopathic remedies, ozone therapy and acupuncture, massage, thermal chambers (sauna), herbal liver and kidney cleansing formulas, antioxidants and mega vitamin/mineral supplements.
Detoxification Aids
To assist the cleansing process, we recommend fresh juice made with a juice extractor once per day. Take a high-quality multi-vitamin supplement and antioxidants such as E and Q10, and one to two tablespoons of mixed essential oils daily such as Udo's Choice (found in health food stores).
This book is a good one
but just one of many.

Juicing recipes

-1 cup of spinach
- 1/2 cucumber
- 2 stalks of celery including leaves
- 3 carrots
- 1/2 apple

Juicing Tip: Juice cucumbers with their skins on. The dark green skin is a great source of chlorophyll, a phytochemical that can help build red blood cells. Cucumbers also contain silica, a mineral that is good for the skin. Make sure to wash them before making cucumber homemade juice recipes.
